2020, Schizophrenia ResearchCitation Excerpt :Of the phospholipids that were higher in the UHR group all were choline containing (PC and SM), with the exception of PS (18:0_18:0) that contributes approximately 0.1% of total erythrocyte phospholipids. The abnormality in phospholipid composition in UHR may be related to increased lipid peroxides (Khan et al., 2002) as low PUFA levels are commonly observed in schizophrenia patients (Horrobin and Huang, 1983; Peet et al., 1995; Hoen et al., 2013). Evidence from brain studies using 31P Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (MRS) suggests there is a decreased synthesis of membrane phospholipids and an altered molecular composition of synaptic vesicles in the prefrontal cortex of adolescents at a genetic risk for schizophrenia (Keshavan et al., 2003).
