Abstract

Rate equations describing the void swelling and dislocation density of irradiated materials are examined from the point of view of their stability against spontaneous symmetry breaking. It is found that for a range of values of the material properties the equations predict growth, by the evolution of anisotropy in the distribution of edge dislocations, even though the initial state is symmetric.
