Dietary intake and lipid profile in children and adolescents with cystic fibrosis
2017, Journal of Cystic FibrosisCitation Excerpt :These findings were not validated by a previous study in 73 paediatric CF patients, aged 10–19 years [22], nor by our study when we analysed the study sample as whole. It was found that patients with pancreatic insufficiency had fat malabsorption resulting in disturbed lipid concentrations [27]. However, this study did not support this finding as lipid concentrations were not related to CFA.
Identification of a novel mutation in the PNLIP gene in two brothers with congenital pancreatic lipase deficiency
2014, Journal of Lipid ResearchCitation Excerpt :Interestingly, the two affected brothers demonstrated slightly decreased levels of total cholesterol, which can be considered to be at the range of hypolipidemia (total cholesterol < 120 mg/dl). While the clinical synopsis of the PNLIP deficiency phenotype does not include hypolipidemia, it was previously shown that pancreatic insufficiency is one of the causes for secondary hypolipidemia (25). Importantly, previous reports demonstrated that even with a nearly complete absence of PNLIP or CLPS, fat absorption was ∼70% of fat intake indicating extrapancreatic sources of lipase (11–13, 15, 16).
Plasma noncholesterol sterols as indicators of cholesterol absorption 1
2013, Journal of Lipid ResearchCholesterol metabolism in pediatric short bowel syndrome after weaning off parenteral nutrition
2010, Digestive and Liver DiseaseCitation Excerpt :The scarce amount of absorbed plant sterols is re-secreted into the intestine via bile [12,13]. Reciprocal ratios of serum non-cholesterol sterols, e.g., lathosterol/campesterol and campesterol/sitosterol, are applicable to assess intestinal function including ileal dysfunction and malabsorptive states [14–18]. Even modest reductions in the absorptive area of the terminal ileum may lead to malabsorption of bile acids impairing their enterohepatic circulation, as previously shown among adults following colectomy [17,18].
