Age-related volumetric alterations in hippocampal subiculum region are associated with reduced retention of the “when” memory component
2022, Brain and CognitionCitation Excerpt :Similarly, in our recent work involving OAs where we investigated the concurrent who, when, where, and what components of episodic memory, we found that a genetic risk factor for Alzheimer disease (AD) (1) decreased memory encoding for the when and where components of stories and (2) decreased memory retention for the where component (Chi, Chiu, & Chang, 2020). Prior studies on autobiographic and episodic memories for the simultaneous examination of multiple contextual elements of an event have also demonstrated that in contrast to younger adults, OAs have poorer when-related recollection relative to other memory components (Davis et al., 2015; Wagenaar, 1986). Although studies on the aforementioned topic have been limited, the available evidence suggests that multiple memory components of an episodic event may not be bound or retained to the same degree in normal aging.
