2016, Aquatic ToxicologyCitation Excerpt :Also, DHAA may interfere with the membrane proteins in the lipid layer of the erythrocyte cell membrane thereby increasing membrane permeability (Bushnell et al., 1985), thus leading to cellular necrosis. Furthermore, DHAA induces conformational changes to integral proteins within the membrane leading to an imbalance of intracellular and extracellular ion concentrations, such as potassium and sodium (Toivola and Isomaa, 1991). DHAA can alter energy production in rainbow trout hepatocytes during acute exposures (Oikari et al., 1983; Rissanen et al., 2003).
