Gain Modulation by Corticostriatal and Thalamostriatal Input Signals during Reward-Conditioned Behavior
2019, Cell ReportsCitation Excerpt :An important finding of this work is that during a Pavlovian reward conditioning task, MSNs are capable of combining corticostriatal and thalamostriatal signals via a multiplication-like rule, with this type of interaction most pronounced in the cue period. Multiplication has long been theorized to be an important aspect of signal processing and computation in the brain (Blomfield, 1974). Several biophysical mechanisms have been proposed for how this arithmetic operation may emerge in single neurons, including nonlinearities in synaptic integration caused by shunting inhibition and NMDA receptors (Holt and Koch, 1997; Koch and Poggio, 1992; Silver, 2010).
