2015, Archives of Psychiatric NursingCitation Excerpt :The Chouinard et al. (1985) study was an earlier unpublished study that was conducted as a two-phase trial involving 24 participants with mania who consumed large doses of an l-tryptophan amino acid over a 2 week period. Using the Clinical Global Inventory, the authors found that severity of symptoms was significantly reduced in the tryptophan group (Chouinard et al., 1985). Sylvia et al. (2013) recommended further study of nutrient-based treatments, especially since published studies related to depression disorders and tryptophan were extremely limited (Sylvia et al., 2013).
