    In may 2006, at a press conference in Sofia, Bulgaria, he described the conditions of detention of the medical staff and their cruel mistreatment (14). The suspects had been beaten with cables and rods, had their tongues, breasts, genitals electrocuted, they had been forbidden to sleep, refused water, raped, dogs had been set on them (15). Eighteen months after pronouncement of the death penalty, on the 25th December 2005 the sentence was overruled and re-trial ordered, as a result of an appeal accusing authorities of forcing testimony by torture (16), and the Supreme Court issued the overruling decision only 2 days after it was announced that Bulgaria, Libya, the USA and the European Union agreed to establish a fund to support the HIV-infected children.
