The predominance of crustaceans and the presence of ice nematodes has also been reported elsewhere (Kern and Carey Jr, 1983; Carey Jr, 1992; Nozais et al., 2001). However, in our study lacked such taxa as acoel flatworms, rotifers, cyclopoid copepods, cnidarians and larvae of polychaetes that are more common in the Arctic sea ice (Kern and Carey Jr, 1983; Gradinger et al., 2005; Schünemann and Werner, 2005; Marquardt et al., 2011).

Ice-produced organic matter is released to the water column during ice melt or may be transferred to the pelagic and benthic systems in form of fecal pellets by ice-associated amphipods (Carey, 1992; Werner, 2000; Michel et al., 2002). Thereby, ice-derived matter often provides an early food pulse to pelagic consumers and, ultimately, benthic detritivores (Carey and Boudrias, 1987; Grebmeier and McRoy, 1989).

The large Cyclopina populations found in sea ice generally comprise ovigerous females (Grainger et al., 1985; Carey, 1992; Melnikov, 1997; Werner et al., 2002a) and up to three cohorts (Carey and Montagna, 1982; Kern and Carey, 1983). The generation cycle is 31 d, indicating an iteroparous multivoltine brood rhythm.
