Effects of chlorpyrifos on in vitro sex steroid production and thyroid follicular development in adult and larval Lake Sturgeon, Acipenser fulvescens
2015, ChemosphereCitation Excerpt :Indeed in sheep and mice persistent dosing of 12.5 mg kg−1 and 6 mg kg−1 chlorpyrifos respectively led to a reduction in circulating levels of T4 (Rawlings et al., 1998; De Angelis et al., 2009). Furthermore, a 120 d exposure of 1.5 mg L−1 to a related compound, fenitrothion, led to significant degeneration of the thyroid follicles in the freshwater murrel, (Saxena and Mani, 1988). However, despite the evidence suggesting potential for disruption of the thyroid hormone system there was no measurable effect on thyroid gland histopathology following exposure to all three concentrations of chlorpyrifos used in the present study.
Sublethal toxicity of carbofuran on the African catfish Clarias gariepinus: Hormonal, enzymatic and antioxidant responses
2014, Ecotoxicology and Environmental SafetyCitation Excerpt :Similar results after exposed of Sarotherodon mossambicus to dimecron pesticide are recorded (Thangavel et al., 2005). Chronic exposure of Channa punctatus to 4.5 mg/L or 5 mg/L carbofuran for four or six months also caused thyroid cell hypertrophy (Saxena and Mani, 1988) and lower blood T4 levels (Bhattacharya, 1993). Also, carbaryl concentrations of 5 and 12 mg/L decreased plasma T4 levels and increased plasma T3 levels in Clarias batrachus (Sinha et al., 1991); this may be due to either increased conversion of T4 to T3 or decreased metabolism of T3.
