2015, PeptidesCitation Excerpt :2) In case the Ca2+-influx is substantial and lasts long so that the Ca2+-ATPases present in the plasma membrane cannot counter the influx, Ca2+-induced Ca2+ release from internal stores will be induced. Such local increases are propagated as waves throughout the cell [33,34]. If they last too long, Ca2+-induced apoptosis will result.
The essence of female-male physiological dimorphism: Differential Ca2+-homeostasis enabled by the interplay between farnesol-like endogenous sesquiterpenoids and sex-steroids? The Calcigender paradigm
2015, General and Comparative EndocrinologyCitation Excerpt :Maybe, part of the solution resides in the fact that it is not so much the interaction of the ligand with a receptor itself, but a change in the lipid composition of the membrane in which the ligand diffuses that e.g. alters the fluidity of the membrane, causes (in)activation of some ion channels (Hardie, 2004). One should also keep in mind that Ca2+ travels as a wave through the cytoplasm (Jaffe, 1991, 1993, 2010) and that therefore it can cause effects at some distance (far away) from where the wave was initiated. Whether the insect sex steroids, the ecdysteroids (De Loof, 2006) compete with JH for the same receptor site is not known.
