2021, Earth-Science ReviewsCitation Excerpt :It is parallel to other late-Variscan faults disrupting the Variscan zonation and previous structures, the more important of which are the South Meseta Fault (SMF), the North Pyrenean Fault (NPF), the Bray Fault (BrF) and the Elbe Fault Zone (EFZ). The position of Iberia in relation to France is shown prior to the opening of the Bay of Biscay, approximately following Le Pichon et al. (1977), and implying a post-Triassic clockwise rotation of c. 35° of the Iberian microplate to account for differences in paleodeclination to both sides of the North Pyrenean Fault (NPF; Van der Voo, 1969; Schott, 1981; Boillot et al., 1984). Rotation in the southern part of the fault allowed the opening of the Bay of Biscay (Choukroune et al., 1973a, 1973b) while the northern, straight segment acted as a left-lateral fault with a translation of c. 400 km between 110 and 75 Ma (Albian-Campanian; Boillot et al., 1984).

The syn-rift deposits in the Diourbel-Thies area have not been intersected by deep well drilling, but the syn-rift section of the southern and northern SMB consists principally of thick Triassic to Early Jurassic evaporites which have been defined from borehole data (Templeton, 1971; Lehner and De Ruiter, 1977; Le Pichon et al., 1977; Liger and Roussel, 1979; Liger, 1980; Ponsard et al., 1988) (Fig. 1a) and overlying inferred Triassic clastic rocks, which may include organic-rich lacustrine rocks. The syn-rift evaporite section in the Casamance sub-basin may be as much as 2000 m thick consisting mostly of salt with an anhydrite cap; whereas the underlying clastic section may be as thick as 1500 m (Atlantic Resources et al., 1987; Ardjuna Resources Ltd, 1989).

(1965) and Smith and Hallam (1970) has become known as Pangea A-1 (Fig. 5A). Although numerous modifications have been proposed for the peri-Atlantic fit of the A-1 reconstruction (Dietz and Holden, 1970; Le Pichon et al., 1977, etc.), they have generally been minor and the parameters of Bullard et al. (1965) have endured as the conventional reference. An important exception is the Euler rotation used to bring Laurussia and Gondwana together (thereby closing the central Atlantic), which, as noted by Bullard et al. (1965), is the least well-constrained parameter, due to the non-unique fit of the central Atlantic continental margins.
