Abstract

The anhydrous chlorides of a number of the lanthanides, thorium, magnesium and other elements have been prepared by refluxing the hydrated chlorides with thionyl chloride. The preparation is simple and effective and gives a product which is free from oxychloride or oxide. The method is of general application to elements whose oxides are not acidic or amphoteric and which are not oxidized by thionyl chloride.
