2022, Behavioural Brain ResearchCitation Excerpt :However, the LH is a large region with a heterogeneous molecular profile [2,12–16] and diverse anatomical connectivity [17–21], and the molecular identity of the LH neurons which participate in stress and anxiety behaviors is not yet fully resolved. The LH has long been implicated in exploratory locomotion [22–24] and LH activity is required for exploratory activity in the open-arm of the elevated plus maze [25], one of the most common behavioral measures of anxiety in rodents [26]. Neural input via connections from higher-order components of the anxiety circuit such as the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (BNST) and hippocampus ventral CA1 region (HPC vCA1) exert influences on anxiety behavior via projections to the LH [9,10].
