Abstract
Exoskeletons are used at industrial workplaces in order to alleviate the physical loading of work and prevent musculoskeletal disorders. The example methodology presented here is intended to facilitate more objective assessment of the supporting effect of exoskeletons. The effects of a passive exoskeleton providing trunk support were analysed with reference to the example of an intervention study involving 12 test subjects who lifted load weights of 10 and 20 kg from two different initial heights. The support characteristic of the exoskeleton, body posture, lumbar joint moments and electromyogram (EMG) of the back extensors were recorded. Besides the maximum values, the data analysis also considered the mean and minimum values of the target parameters, in order to permit recognition of both the effective support effect and possible side-effects.
Use of the exoskeleton reduced the maximum lumbar joint moments by an average of 11% to 20%. Averaged over the entire lifting phase, significant stress alleviation effects (of 6% to 8%) were observed only from the deep initial lifting position. The EMG of the back extensors revealed reductions (on average of 18% to 27%) only in the maximum values for lifting from the deep initial position.
Practical Relevance. The methodology described here assists firstly in formulating more realistic expectations of exoskeletons in the context of applications in the field. Secondly, the findings yield substantially more objective criteria for both selection and evaluation of exoskeletons in field applications.
