De somatische gezondheidstoestand van patiënten met een ‘severe mental illness’ (SMI) of ernstige psychiatrische aandoening – waaronder schizofrenie, ernstige depressie, schizo-affectieve en bipolaire stoornissen – krijgt steeds meer aandacht in de geestelijke gezondheidszorg. Somatische screening en de hierop volgende behandeling zijn van cruciaal belang voor een goede lichamelijk en geestelijke gezondheid van deze patiënten.
