State of the art and emerging trends in operations and maintenance of offshore oil and gas production facilities: Some experiences and observations

Abstract

Plant maintenance has been a discipline that has gradually evolved with the industrial revolution. For quite some time, it has been a “necessary evil” in production, manufacturing, and process settings. The changing business needs and industrial conditions have had various impacts on the maintenance process, particularly over the last few years. While some industries have inherent difficulties seeing what maintenance is all about, others have begun to add more flavor to the organizational maintenance practices. This article brings an overview of developments within the offshore oil and gas production sector.

Jayantha P. Liyanage received the B. Sc. degree in production engineering (First Class Honours), M. Sc. degree in human factors (Distinction), and Ph.D. degree in offshore engineering. He is currently a professor, and specializes in industrial asset management at the University of Stavanger (UiS), Norway. He is also the chair and a project advisor of Centre for Industrial Asset Management (CIAM), at UiS. Furthermore, he is the co-chair of the European Research Network on Strategic Engineering Asset Management (EURENSEAM). He was recently appointed as a member of board of directors of the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE), Stavanger section, and serves as the chairman of the scholarship committee. He is a founding fellow of the International Society of Engineering Asset Management (ISEAM), and involves in various activities at international capacity. He is actively involved in joint industry projects both at advisory and managerial capacities, and also currently serves at the principal and external advisory capacities of a number of Ph.D. projects. For his performance, he has received a number of prestigious awards inclusive of University of Peradeniya Award for the best performance in engineering in 1995, Colombo Dockyard Award for the best performance in production engineering in 1995, the Overall Best in Masters in 1999, Lyse Energy Research Award for excellent research and academic contributions in 2001, Society of Petroleum Engineers Best Ph.D. Award in 2003, Emerald Literati Club Award for excellence in 2004. He serves as an editorial reviewer and a member of international editorial boards of a number of international journals, and actively involves in national and international conferences as a member of international steering committees and program chair.

His research interests include technology and engineering management, value added processes, risk based decisions, asset operations, maintenance technology, work processes, sustainable industrial systems and processes, human-technology-organization, ergonomics, knowledge management and process intelligence, total quality, information systems and decision loops, and performance measurement and management.
