Abstract
Polyacrylate resins were prepared by a copolymerization of acrylates and methacrylates, in the presence (or absence) of a reactive nanosilica (RN), and polyacrylate resins were also modified by a half-blocked toluene diisocyanate (TDI). The RN, was prepared by a sol-gel process using tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) and functionalized with 3-(trimethoxysilyl) propyl methacrylate (MPS). The RN was determined to have an average particle diameter of around 10 nm. The resin was thus transformed into an emulsion and deposited on steel plate using an electrophoretic coating process. The deposited films were further cured in an oven, where the half-blocked TDI crosslinked to form networks. The presence of nanosilica in the deposited film enhances physical properties, such as abrasion resistance, impact resistance, and thermal stability.
