Abstract
The current economic conditions in the German health care system result in increased cost pressure for hospitals. In the diagnosis-related groups (DRG) system, the number of cases per unit of time and the efficiency in human resource allocation and material usage may contribute to the profit of a hospital. The operating room as the most expensive department of a hospital is of particular importance, because it accounts for up to 50% of the cost of a patient’s treatment. In recent years, the profile requirements for operating room managers has developed rapidly, which must lead to professionalization in Germany. In the following contribution, the key responsibilities for operating room management are described using the University Hospital Münster as an example.
