Summary
Clinical and therapeutic aspects of acute bacillary dysentery in 140 children of both the sexes have been studied. The presence of knee joint arthritis in a convalescing male child was an uncommon manifestation of the disease. The association of urinary tract infection in 10% of the cases during the illness was of great concern in the management of acute bacillary dysentery. Comparative evaluation of the drugs revealed that ampicillin gave a higher cure rate (98.8%) when compared with sulpha (20%) and tetracycline (50%). Moreover, non-responders to sulpha and tetracycline improved when shifted to ampicillin. Death was recorded in 3.5% of the cases only who arrived in the hospital late and had associated malnutrition and other complications.
