Summary
This paper was inspired by Bondi’s formula for gravitational energy transfer, and recent work on this by Cooperstock and Booth. It concerns only Newtonian gravitation and aims at clarifying the concept of energy in this context. Use is made of gravitational energy density, suggested by Maxwell, but not acceptable to him since it is negative.
