Summary
The energy distribution of 10 Å neutrons scattered by H2O and D2O at 22 °C and at various angles is reported. In correspondence with the small momentum transfers involved in our measurements a broadening of the incident spectrum due to diffusive motion is in agreement with both the continuous-diffusion model and the modified crystalline model. As far as the inelastic spectrum is concerned, we find a series of peaks in the range (4÷40) meV which confirms and extend the results of the other authors. The most interesting results are, however, the discrete energy transfers, measured in the range (0.15÷4) meV, revealing a fine structure. An attempt of interpretation of these energy transfers is given.
