Fine structure of the tegument of cercariae ofSchistosoma mansoni

Summary

The tegument ofSchistosoma mansoni was studied with the electrone microscope. The results were compared with previously described data and it was found that:

  1. 1.

The tegument and the underlying “fibrous layer” are thicker on the body wall than on the tail.

  2. 2.

The so-called “spherical dense bodies” I and II are predominant in the tegument of the cercarial body.

  3. 3.

The material of the “fibrous layer” and SbII probably take part in forming the “Cercarienhülle”.

  4. 4.

In addition to the three types of “sinnespapillae” which have been described previously, there seems to be another type (IV. type).
