Abstract
It can be assumed from the data that ecological conditions favorable for the production and accumulation ofFusarium toxins in cereal grains and soil occur only during certain years.
A relationship has been established betweenF. poae andF. sporotrichioides found in overwintered cereal grains and in soil in 1943–1944.
The following environmental conditions favored toxin formation in soil and overwintered grain: relatively high winter temperatures, deep snow cover, frequent freezing and thawing, altitude, light rainfall in autumn 1943. The occurrence of ATA in spring 1944 could be predicted by the presence of toxicity in vegetative cereal parts during autumn 1943. The largest number of toxic samples was detected in spring 1944, when ATA was widespread.
Growth characteristics of toxicFusaria varied in vitro under different laboratory conditions.
We have domonstrated conclusively that T-2 toxin, produced byF. poae andF. sporotrichioides, was the principal component responsible for the fatal incidents of ATA. All syndromes of ATA have been well documented in test animals.
