Immunohistological localization of testosterone in the growing antler of the white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus)

Abstract

Using immunohistological methods (fluorescein and peroxidase labeled double antibody technique), the localization of testosterone in the antlers of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) at the beginning of the period of accelerated calcification was examined. The most intense reaction for testosterone was found in the prochondral blastema layer and in the growing follicles of the velvet. The findings may indicate the importance of testosterone in bone matrix synthesis.

Résumé

La localisation de testostérone dans les andouillers de daims à queue blanche (Odocoileus virginianus), au début de la période de calcification accélérée, est étudiée par des méthodes immunohistologiques (la technique d'anticorps doublement marqués à la fluorescéine et la péroxydase). La réaction la plus intense à la testostérone est observée dans la couche du blastème prochondrale et dans les follicules en voie de développement de la partie veloutée des andouillers. Ces résultats semblent confirmer l'importance de la testostérone dans la synthèse de la matrice osseuse.

Zusammenfassung

Die Lokalisation von Testosteron im Geweihgewebe des Weißwedelhirsches (Odocoileus virginianus) zu Beginn der Phase der beschleunigten Kalzifizierung wurde unter Anwendung der doppelten Antikörper-Technik (Fluorescein- und Peroxidase-Markierung) immunohistologisch untersucht. Die größte Anhäufung von Testosteron wurde in den Schichten des prochondralen Blastems und in den wachsenden Follikeln des Bastgewebes beobachtet. Die Befunde weisen auf die Bedeutung des Testosterons für die Matrix-Synthese hin
