Zusammenfassung
Bei 123 Personen, 80 Männern und 43 Frauen, im Alter von 16–77 Jahren, wurde der Einfluß des Alters auf die Flüssigkeitsräume des Körpers untersucht. Das gesamte Körperwasser wurde als Antipyrin-, die extracelluläre Flüssigkeit als Bromid-Verteilungsvolumen bestimmt. Die intracelluläre Flüssigkeit wurde durch Abzug des Bromid- vom Antipyrin-Verteilungsvolumen erhalten. Es fanden sich folgende Ergebnisse:

Das gesamte Körperwasser nimmt, bezogen auf das Gewicht, jenseits des 5. Lebensjahrzehnts ab. Diese Abnahme beruht auf einer Verminderung der intracellulären Flüssigkeit.

Die extracelluläre Flüssigkeit bleibt dagegen weitgehend konstant. Bei Bezug auf das Gewicht zeigt sich bei den Männern jenseits des 6. Lebensjahrzehnts sogar eine signifikante Zunahme.

Die Abnahme der intracellulären Flüssigkeit ist auf den Verlust an Körperzellmasse zurückzuführen, der bei Männern und Frauen jenseits des 5. Lebensjahrzehnts eintritt. Die weitgehende Konstanz der extracellulären Flüssigkeit beruht darauf, daß die Reduktion der Muskulatur und die Zunahme des Fettgewebes das Volumen der interstitiellen Flüssigkeit absolut und relativ in gegensinniger Richtung beeinflussen und der Beitrag beider sich etwa aufhebt.
