An experiment in the education of the preprofessional mental health worker: The Purdue program

Abstract

Purdue University has initiated and is researching an associate degree program to educate a middlelevel generalist for the field of mental health. There is evidence of an upsurge of interest in this type of program across the country. The background, rationale, objectives, present status, and other relevant parameters of this pilot project are reviewed. The implications of the impact of this type of worker upon mental health theory and practice are discussed as are certain constraints and problems encountered.
