Curriculum vitae. Jürgen R. Bierich was born 1921 in Hamburg. He graduated in 1946 from the Medical School of Hamburg University and afterwards was a resident in the Dept. of Pediatrics in Hamburg under Degkwitz, Eckstein and then, for the longest period, under Schäfer, as well as in the Dept. of Internal Medicine under Jores. His scientific activities were mainly concerned with pediatric endocrinology, with an accent on physiology and pathology of the pituitary and adrenal glands as well as sexual maturation. In 1956 he received the title Privat-Dozent, and in 1962 Professor. In 1968 he was appointed Professor and Chairman of Pediatrics at the University of Tübingen. During 1973/74 he was president of the German Society of Endocrinology. Since 1979 he is an elected member of the German Academy of Natural Scientists Leopoldina. At present his main interests concern problems of growth and development and, in addition, pediatric aid in the third world.
