Photoproduction of H2 and NADPH2 by polyurethane-immobilized cyanobacteria

Summary

Cyanobacterial cells were grown in polyurethane foams (polyester or polyvinyl types). Chlorogloea fritschii, Nostoc muscorum and Mastigocladus laminosus remained immobilized in the foams and were used for continuous photoproduction of H2 from ascorbate with methyl viologen (MV) and hydrogenase or Pt catalysts, for periods in excess of 9 days. Foam-immobilized N. muscorum continuously photoreduced exogenous NADP for at least 24 h in the presence of Fd-NADP reductase with ascorbate as electron donor.
