Abstract

Physiological studies and the functions of different enzymes involved in sucrose metabolism during sugar beet root development have not been properly understood. An experiment was conducted to evaluate the physiological parameters and sucrose metabolism in three different varieties of sugar beet. Statistical analysis of the data revealed that, number of beet roots, beet yield and total sugars in beet juice were significantly higher in HI-0064 as compared to Posada and Dorotea. Significant differences in enzyme activities of sucrose metabolism were documented at 3 and 6 months of crop growth. There was not much difference in juice quality among these varieties. From these results HI-0064 was found to be a promising genotype among the three cultivars.
