Physiological aspects of the regulation of extracellular enzymes ofphanerochaete chrysosporiwn

Abstract

The formation and decay of lignolytic enzymes, along with the generation of other extracellular metabolites in submerged cultures ofPhanerochaete chrysosporium, were studied under different physiological conditions. Whereas lignin peroxidase (LiP) was detectable only in a narrow range of O2 tension and nitrogen concentration, manganese peroxidase (MnP) reached considerable levels over a broad range. The decay of LiP and MnP activities under lignolytic conditions paralleled that of heme and total proteins. The conditions that decrease or suppress LiP or MnP activities resulted in high levels of extracellular protease activity and/or polysaccharides.
