Abstract

Every elementr of reduced trace 0 in a simple finite dimensional algebraR is a sum of at most 2 commutators. IfR innot a division ring thenr is a commutator, unlessr is a scalar (in which case char(R)≠0). The method of proof provides a generic division algebra of transcendence degreen 2−1.
