Peripheral airway function in healthy young cigarette smokers

Abstract

We evaluated the usefulness of a number of the most widely used “small airway tests” in separating a group of 60 young (20 – 35 years) healthy cigarette smokers from a matched group of 50 nonsmokers. Only the Viso\(\dot V\), CV/VC, and CC/TLC separated both male and female smokers and nonsmokers. In addition, these tests correlated with the smoking index and detected 18% – 24% abnormalities when compared with mean values for the nonsmoking control groups.
