Summary

The conditioning of eggs ofEphestia kuehniella Zell. by cold storage and by ultraviolet radiation was studied in relation to aTrichogramma rearing program. It was shown that eggs which had not reached the gastrulation stage were the most sensitive to ultraviolet radiations and, therefore, should be chosen for such treatment. No changes in the biotic potential of eitherT. evanescens Westw. orT. brasiliensis Ash. could be detected after these insects were reared through 6 successive generations on eggs irradiated for 4 hours and held at 4°C for 4 days. The fertility ofT. brasiliensis was even increased by this treatment. A highly significant difference in the fertility and the duration of oviposition was noted between the two species. The longest period of time the eggs could be held in cold storage was 60 days. Beyond this period, there was a loss of a certain factor indispensable for the development of theTrichogramma embryo.
