Summary
A series of vanillin related compounds is derived using bis-trimethylsilyl trifluoroacetamide (BSTFA) for phenols, hydroxy phenols and acid phenols, and methoxyamine hydrochloride for aromatic and phenolic aldehyds. The resulting TMSi, MO and MO-TMSi derivatives are separated on SE-30 and OV-17 liquid phases in a temperature programmed operation. The methylene unit (MU) values of 12 compounds are determined on these two phases.
Mass spectra of MO piperonal, TMSi vanillin, MO-TMSi isovanillin, di-TMSi vanillic alcohol and di-TMSi vanillic acid are discussed. GLC-MS application for vanilla identification is given.
