The problem of the extension of the Siberian anticyclone towards Southeast Europe, and its relation to atmospheric circulation anomalies over the Northern Hemisphere

Summary

Twenty occasions in the period 1968–1972 when the Siberian anticyclone extended westwards over southeast Europe are considered in terms of mean surface, 500 mbar and 1000/500 mbar thickness charts. These means were compared with normal values based on the period 1950–1972 and statistically significant anomaly patterns over the northern hemisphere were drawn. The mean and anomaly patterns are used to show the development and subsequent break-up of the extension of the Siberian anticyclone over the Balkans.
