Fine structural localization of acid phosphatase and arylsulfatase in the chick heterophil leucocytes

Summary

Two distinct groups of granules are present in the chick heterophil leucocytes: a) large spindle shaped granules; b) small elongated granules. The acid hydrolases (acid phosphatase and arylsulfatase) occur only in granules of the first group, which therefore can be regarded as lysosomes, whilst the granules of the second group are always negative. The lead phosphate deposits are found in different zones during various maturation stages of the large spindle shaped granules: at first they occur in their periphery, then in form of clusters throughout the matrix, finally they appear exclusively in the center of the granule. The results obtained have also been discussed in comparison with data on mammalian heterophil leucocytes.
