The nature and biological activity of IPN virus neutralizing antibodies in normal and immunized rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri)

Summary

By means of the plaque-reduction technique high titres of neutralizing antibodies to IPN virus were demonstrated in serum from rainbow trout reared in apparently IPN-free environments as well as from trout exposed to the virus through natural or artificial infection. The neutralizing antibodies were in all cases found to be sensitive to incomplete reduction and alkylation. When trout sera were subjected to gel filtration on Sepharose 4B high titres of neutralizing antibodies were found in fractions from the first protein peak, which contained a protein of β-2 (macroglobulin) mobility.

The production of a monovalent rabbit antiserum to trout immunoglobulin is described.
