Abstract
The stability of the equilibrium is studied in a system heated from above and consisting of two layers of different fluids of finite thickness. The physical mechanism of the instability is discussed and shown to be very different from the Rayleigh mechanism. The ranges of variation of the parameters of the system in which the effect is possible are found, and the boundaries of stability are determined quantitatively.
