Summary
The digenetic trematodes can be divided on account of the development of their metacercariae, as far as they show this stage, into three groups: A) species whose metacercariae encyst in the open; B) species whose (encysted) metacercariae do not grow inside the second intermediate host; C) species whose metacercariae undergo growth and metamorphosis before they enter the resting stage in the second intermediate host.
A review of the literature referring to the minimum time of development and the maximal life span, supplemented by experiments recorded in this paper, shows the following result: The metacercariae of group A, as far as tested in this respect, are capable of infesting the final host immediately from the first day after encystation, i.e. in some cases already after a few hours. Their life span is from 3 to 7 months, and under particularly favourable conditions up to one year. The metacercariae of group B need at least several days to reach the stage when they are capable of infesting the final host. Under normal ecological conditions this capability is maintained for 10 to 14 months, in the case of Isthmiophora for more than 3 years. The metacercariae of group C are capable of infestation only after completion of their growing stage and their encystation (in species where encystation occurs), i.e. after a period of weeks. This group has shown the largest life spans so far recorded: Metacercariae of Diplostomatids will remain alive—if kept in their specific habitat—for two years at the rate of nearly 100% and can (in the case of Posthodiplostomum cuticola) reach a life span of 7 years.
The metacercarial stage represents the predominant phase in the life cycle of digenetic trematodes by means of which these parasites can survive ecologically unfavourable periods (p.e. absence of the final host owing to seasonal conditions) in the biotope. This stage of development allows their life cycles a high rate of extension.
