Abstract
The effective Landé factor, g, of a magnetic sensitive line can be calculated by means of the experimental Landé factors of the lower and upper levels of the atomic transition. Values of g for several iron lines of the solar spectrum are calculated and compared with the approximate values based on the L-S coupling scheme. Simple formulae are also derived to express the variance of the distributions of the σ and π components of a Zeeman multiplet around the respective centers of gravity.
