Abstract
The growth of five varieties of Lolium perenne was compared while growing in nutrient solution. Differences in shoot growth were found to be due to variations in the rate of tiller production rather than the size of tiller. The size of the individual roots varied with the variety, and it was this variation which largely caused differences in the root growth relative to shoot growth. The larger the root relative to shoot growth the greater was the adverse effect of defoliation.
