Abstract

Psychosis and mania are psychiatric disorders wherein there is loss of insight for the affected patients. While the exact pathophysiology behind psychosis has not been confirmed, the dopaminergic theory still forms the frontline of management. Antipsychotic agents can be broadly divided into typical and atypical, mainly based on their affinity towards dopaminergic receptors. While the typical antipsychotics are still used in emergencies, the atypical agents are preferred due to their added safety margin. The agents used in the management of psychosis are detailed in this chapter. The chapter also explains the drugs that are used to manage mania and bipolar disorder. While lithium is considered to be the classical mood stabilizer, there have been several other newer agents that are used in bipolar disorder.
