Abstract
When an acute hemodynamic decompensation occurs in a cancer patient, it is frequently attributed to an underlying venous thromboembolism, an entity that includes deep vein thrombosis and the more ominous pulmonary thromboembolism. In some cases, the embolism may be nonthrombotic in nature, produced by pure tumor emboli sans thrombosis, which is termed as pulmonary tumor embolism. We report one such case in an elderly woman produced by mutlicentric hepatocellular carcinoma in a background of posthepatitic macronodular cirrhosis. There was an associated cavo-atrial mass.
