Abstract

Knee surgeries can be classified as joint-preserving surgeries such as osteotomy, ligament reconstruction, meniscus repair, and cartilage repair, and joint-replacing arthroplasties such as unicondylar knee arthroplasty (KA), patellofemoral joint arthroplasty, and total knee arthroplasty. While the incidence of knee surgeries has been increasing worldwide, substantial portion of patients experience failure. In Korea, over 70,000 cases of primary knee arthroplasties were done in 2019, with over 5000 cases of revision arthroplasties. The complicated knee anatomy and various etiologies of arthroplasty failure interfere with the accurate assessment of post-operative complications.

There are many knee prosthesis-related complications such as periprosthetic infection, aseptic loosening, polyethylene wear, osteolysis, metallosis, instability, and periprosthetic fracture. Distinguishing the periprosthetic uptake patterns on bone scans aids the differential diagnosis.
