Abstract

Fragility fractures due to osteoporosis, such as a proximal hip fracture (PHF), are a serious public health issue worldwide. The mortality rate at 1 year after PHF is two to three times lower in Japan than in Western countries. Several lines of evidence indicate that postoperative rehabilitation and preservation of activities of daily living influence mortality. In Japan, the political insurance system covers post-surgical hospitalization for 3–4 months with rehabilitation services provided at both acute-care and rehabilitation hospitals. These findings indicate that the low mortality after PHF in Japan may be due to the provisions for extended rehabilitation services.
