Biodiesel from Flowering Plants

Abstract

The plants of the sedge family Cyperaceae are mostly perennial herbs, rarely annual known to perennate the intermittent seasons through creeping rhizomes or tubers. Around 4000 plant species constitute this family. They inhabit damp places. Their underground rhizomes, tubers or stolons and aerial shoots are smooth, solid, glaucous or glabrous, without distinction into nodes and internodes. These plants are seen distributed throughout the world but most abundantly occur in temperate zones. The tubers yield 25–30% oil which is considered as a raw material for biodiesel.
