Abstract

Cancer is a set of diseases characterized by unmanageable growth and swelling of abnormal cells. It is the second leading cause of mortality worldwide. Around the world, more than ten million of people are diagnosed with cancer every year and nearly half of the patients ultimately die from it. There are various ways such as chemotherapy, radiation therapy, surgery, bone marrow transplant, immunotherapy, targeted drug therapy, etc. by which cancer can be treated. Various chemical substances are used as drugs to treat cancer, e.g., melphalan, cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, epirubicin, etoposide, cis-platin, carboplatin, topocan, irinotecan, etc. In most of the cases, the usual cancer drugs are losing their therapeutic values because of poor solubility, lack of tumor selectivity, and multidrug resistance property of cancer cells. In this scenario, expansion of therapeutic modality is urgently needed. Nowadays, peptide-based drugs are promisingly used to treat many diseases including cancer. To treat cancer, peptides are used in various ways such as drug, vaccine, drug carrier, hormone, radionuclide carrier, etc. In this chapter, we have taken an attempt to provide an overview of applications of peptide drugs in diagnosis and treatment of various types of cancers.
