Abstract

This paper is to examine the violence against the architecture from the perspective of historical development and cultural anthropology in the Developing World. This study argues that this violence is the outcome of the process of contestations, negotiations, and constructions for cultural integration and acculturation that have failed to overcome the concept of otherness. The cases are mainly carried out from Indonesia between 1600 and present. The aim of this study is to describe, examine, and dismantle the backgrounds and events of violence against the work of architecture of otherness by patrimonial regimes; in the argument that the ferocity happens because they do not want to see themselves in the other. In order to see otherness in ourselves and vice versa, this study argues that the concept of the patrimonial nation based on monolith culture should be deconstructed toward democracy with an emphasis on multiculturalism, social justice, through the sovereignty of law.
