Abstract

Thermal straightening is a widely used process for dealing with undesired distortion. Flame heating and induction heating are the traditional heating processes used in industry. However, these two heating processes have an insignificant effect on vertical steel plates. This study compared the thermal deformation caused by induction heating with the thermal deformation caused by arc heating and laser beam heating which have greater heat input. The thermal deformations induced by these three processes were simulated by established heat source models, and simulated results were compared with experimental results to confirm the model’s accuracy. With investigating the mechanism of thermal deformation with the finite element method it was found that the thermal deformation have a significant relationship with the amount of central zone plastic deformation.
